Chopsticks
In the Chines culture chopsticks have been used for hundreds, even thousands of years. The Chinese character for chopsticks is 筷子and, the pinyin is kuaizi. Not only are they used for eating but, also make great gifts for friends and family. Originally they were only used for eating and used because knifes or not needed. It was also, seen as extremely rude and disrespectful if one brought to a dinner table because knifes are considered as weapons. They are also a traditional wedding gift given to couples for luck and, for the wife’s fertility.
Some taboos of using chopsticks are: making noise with them on the side of bowl/plate, pointing them at a person, sucking at the end of them, poking them at dishes and, placing them vertically in a bowl of food. When one taps their chopsticks against the bowl it is often associated with beggars begging for food. Pointing them at others, sucking on them and, poking them at dishes are all considered rude. When, placing them vertically is often associated to incense burning a funerals or when they are sacrificed to the dead.
